Black Bear Habitat Use in Tahoe National Forest, California

Four radio-collared female black bears (Ursus americanus) were located 545 times during 1979 and 1980. We evaluated bear habitat use in relation to dominant vegetation, canopy closure, crown diameter, and rotten log density by comparing use to availability. Use of dominant vegetation types by bears was disproportionate to availability in all seasons, reflecting seasonal food availability. Wet meadows, hardwood, and manzanita habitats were seasonally preferred by bears, and we suggest that protection of these habitats is necessary to maintain the local bear population.
