IBA relies on the ongoing financial support of our valued donors to operate a number of different programs and help support ongoing operational costs and outreach activities. Our programs provide both financial and in-kind support that directly helps scientific researchers, managers and students working with the world’s eight bear species.
Our first grants program was established in 1992, made possible through a generous gift from the John Sheldon Bevins Memorial Foundation. Bear researcher John Bevins, along with a fellow researcher and pilot, disappeared during a polar bear monitoring flight over Alaska’s Arctic Ocean on October 11, 1990. The foundation was established by John’s widow, Dr. Julia Bevins, to memorialize John’s dedication to bears and improved bear management. IBA was named as an annual recipient of the Foundation’s charitable donations, which lead to the establishment of our first Research and Conservation Grants program.
In 2004 IBA launched the Bear Conservation Fund, with a vision of increasing IBA’s support of bear research and conservation among practitioners in the field. Today, IBA operates numerous programs that specifically support experience, exchange, outreach and travel to IBA Conferences for our members. This includes the regular publication of our scientific journal Ursus and International Bear News (IBN), hosting our annual conference and developing public education materials.
Through the ongoing generosity of our donors, IBA has successfully established different programs to support bear research and management right around the world. These programs are specifically designed to support bears and those who study or work alongside them, and your support is important for their continued success.
Since 1968, IBA has published over 950 scientific papers on all species of bears around the world in our peer reviewed journal, Ursus and conference proceedings. In addition to our peer-reviewed works, IBA produces an international newsletter, International Bear News (IBN). IBA has awarded over 230 grants across five programs. This includes Research and Conservation efforts across all eight bear species, community-based Special Grants, Experience and Exchange opportunities for members and assisting students and other professionals to attend IBA’s regular global conferences. We also rely on donations to host our annual conference which allows members and non-members to meet and provide updates on the eight bear species.
As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organisation in the United States, your donation will be used to support each of our programs and their operational costs. Click on each tile below to find out more.
From now until the end of 2024, your donations will be doubled up to $10,000, thanks to a generous anonymous donor. This is a fantastic chance to maximize your impact and demonstrate our community’s commitment to making a difference. Every contribution, no matter the amount, is crucial for achieving our goals. Let’s unite and rise to this challenge—donate today and help us take full advantage of this opportunity! Thank you for your generosity!
